Huh, maybe! The fact that you get to name the lion on his ring does suggest to me that it's a name Squall invented (although of course you also choose the names of Squall and Rinoa). Were Squall's pendant, ring and gunblade engraving all modelled after an existing concept of a legendary GF, or did he just get a bunch of lion stuff and pretend that it all represents his fursona? I don't think anyone else ever mentions Griever, which points more towards 'Squall invented this lion GF' than towards 'this is an existing legend'.
I don't know about prevailing theories on the time compression sequence, I'm afraid! (I tend not to immerse myself too deeply in the fandom's theories because I absolutely loathe the popular 'Squall Is Dead' theory and want to avoid discussion of it at all costs.) I just assumed that, because all of time exists at the same point in time compression, different moments were overlapping and distorting each other.
