You absolutely do not have to do the deep sea research lab quest if you don't want to! If you do want to, I'd probably recommend only getting Bahamut, rather than going through the whole place to fight Ultima Weapon and draw Eden.
If you don't have Siren, definitely don't bother going after Ultima Weapon. You'll need Siren's Move-Find ability to find the save point immediately before Ultima Weapon, meaning that without her you'll have to go through the whole lower part of the sea centre again if you die.
How to get through the sea centre with minimal fighting:
- In the first room (the one with the Ruby Dragons and Bahamut), only move when the pillar is dark. When it starts glowing, stop moving. When you're answering the questions, choose the first option for the first question (you'll fight Ruby Dragon), the second option for the second question (you'll fight Ruby Dragon), and the invisible third option for the third question (you'll fight Bahamut).
- If you do decide to go through the whole sea centre, look up how to solve the steam puzzle without Zell. If Zell solves it for you, you'll have compulsory powerful encounters the rest of the way down.
