Yeah, totally agreed on how tricky redemption arcs are. I've never brkoken it down ito arcs like that, probably because I get so twitchy about them -- the third kind you mention, REDEMPTION THROUGH LOVE, makes me berserk with rage. I always end up feeling that the person writing them is looking for fundamentally different things out of the narrative than I am. Like, I get into a character because I enjoy the canon of them being a bad person, whereas in a "redeemed by love" storyline, particularly in fic, is less about the character as they are and more about the ~~ magical healing power of love ~~~~
Which is to say:
You can be a good person and still have lots of sex with lots of willing partners. Having lots of sex with lots of willing partners does not make you a Bad Person who needs a redemption arc.
