Twitter is a hot mess for me too, and I've been on it for over a year at this point. It's all right for small interactions, and it's not a bad place for artists to drop still art, but it's not at all made with any sort of archiving in mind (certainly not personal, which I vastly prefer) and it's a massive pain for trying to hold an actual conversation with anyone.
Depending on how overwhelming it is, there are a few things you can do if you poke around your settings! As soon as they let you turn off people's likes showing up on your timeline, I was all over that. Also, I don't know if they default you to the 'best tweets first' setting for new accounts, but if you go into your account settings I hiiiiiighly suggest turning that off so that your timeline is chronological -- the best tweets first thing tends to hide a lot of stuff you probably want to see if you're following people.
It's still a mess, but that might make things a bit easier, at least. Fortunately, I don't really think people are going to stick with twitter as a main platform any more than it has been? It's pretty probably going to be pillowfort if they get their shit together, and if not, then here (fingers and toes crossed).
